Written by playwright, Lonnie Carter with Linda Rossi, the play is titled 1781 for the year that Elizabeth Freeman and another enslaved person, Brom, won their freedom in the Great  Barrington Court of Law, both represented by Theodore Sedgwick of Sheffield.  Upon winning her freedom, she discarded her slave name of “Mumbet” and chose the name Elizabeth Freeman by which she is known
