Families Belong Together Protest – Stand Up for Justice

NAACP Berkshires is honored to co-sponsor  local participation in this national event.

We must stand against the inhumane treatment of immigrants by our country. This is not the first time America has separated families, tearing apart children from their parents. It is always wrong and intolerable.
Speakers at the Families Belong Together protest include:
– Mayor Linda M. Tyer, City of Pittsfield
– Rev. Joel Huntington, South Congregational Church, Pittsfield
– Donna Morelli, immigration attorney, Central West Justice Center
– Dr. Eli Newberger, retired pediatrician and child advocate
– Sopheap Nhim, childhood refugee
Over 700 protests attended by hundreds of thousands of people across the country will be held on this same day. The lead partners of this National Day of Action are calling upon participants to WEAR WHITE—as a striking visual symbol that will also connect attendees in solidarity to each-other and channel historic social justice movements unified by one color of clothing. Please bring water, sunscreen and a shade hat, it will be a sunny day!
Our demands are to:
  • Reunite families now. Permanently end family separation and immediately reunify those that have been separated. ICE must release parents immediately so that ORR can reunify them with their children.
  • End family detention. Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Children do not belong in baby cages and internment-like camps. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation.
  • End ‘Zero Humanity.’ Reverse the Trump administration’s policy that created this crisis and chaos to begin with. Parents should not be criminally prosecuted for doing what all parents do, which is bring their children to safety. This horrible nightmare for families will only end when Trump permanently stops his 100% prosecution policy.
