Hearing on Policing in Pittsfield
Pittsfield City Council’s Ordinances and Rules Subcommittee will meet Monday August 6, 2018 at 7 PM to consider the proposed ordinance to re-establishing the Police Advisory and Review Board submitted by Mayor Tyer last month.
It is important to let the City Council and the Mayor know that citizens are concerned about this issue. Please attend to demonstrate your concern and to learn about policing in Pittsfield and Mayor Linda Tyer’s proposal.
Those in attendance will:
- hear multiple first-person accounts of mistreatment and misconduct by Pittsfield officers;
- learn about the nature of internal affairs probes into the resulting civilian complaints;
- hear a review the department’s lengthy record of criminal charges, firings and other embarrassments;
- learn about the lack of democratic accountability for policing policies and strategies;
City councilors in attendance will get a copy of a model police oversight ordinance drafted for Pittsfield by a group of concerned citizens and based on the successful models used in Springfield and Cambridge.
